Who we are

STARR CAMP was given birth out of a need to provide students with a novel camp experience during the the July/August vacation in Trinidad. As we researched the types of experiences offered to students during the 2014 school holidays, we realized that the focus was either primarily academics with a few fun activities included or emphasis was placed on particular skill areas eg,. sports, robotics etc. We wanted a camp that was different, one which focused on academics and recreational activities in equal measure. In addition, we wanted to introduce students to the dispositions needed to become reflective thinkers. Reflective thinking is not intentionally taught in our schools and many of our students graduate from our education system without any of the tools needed to understand who they are as learners and how they can become better students.
-
OUR TARGET POPULATION
Our camp serves the academic and social needs of all students from age five to those entering Form One in September. Our teachers are particularly skilled in working with students who are having difficulty at school and need small group support during the July/August vocation. We are committed to a ten to one pupil teacher ratio.
-
OUR STAFF
STARRCamp is managed by its Founder, Kitts Cadette B.Sc., M.Ed., its Camp Director, Suzette Phillips B.Ed., M.Ed and its Administrator, Gail Spann B.Ed., M.Ed., Our teachers all have their B.Ed, degree and, in some cases, their M.Ed. degree. Having opened our doors in 2014, some of our Starrcamp graduates are now volunteers and they work with our teachers as assistants. We have also recruited some of Eshe’s Form Five students as volunteers.
-
OUR HISTORY
Initially, we focused on a more generalized curriculum, STARR CAMP ALL INCLUSIVE We soon realized there was a demand for some specialization and so STARR CAMP READING INTENSIVE; STARR CAMP S.E.A. PREPARATION and STARR CAMP FORM 1 ORIENTATION were added to the options offered. In the early days. our numbers were few but as we learned marketing strategies and more parents heard of us, our numbers increased.
-
INCLUSIVITY
An unexpected outcome of our camp has been the coming together of students with learning differences and their neurotypical peers. In 2022, we had students from twenty-five schools, coming from as far south as New Grant, attending our camp. The journey continues and each year we are bigger and better! God has indeed shown us favor.

Programs Overview

Muscle Mania
To keep your child engaged in learning while having fun. STARRCamp outfits each student with great ways to keep your child's mental muscles strong and fit. The day begins with "SPARKS" to spark fire up the neurons and charge them up for the day's activities. "Getting students active from the start has many benefits in addition to the ones previously mentioned. Besides engaging students from the start and warming up their bodies, instant activities also help address other needs in your daily teaching." Mushkin, J. (2021, July 20). Instant Activities- A Great Way to Start Your Day! SPARK PE. https://sparkpe.org/instant-activities-a-great-way-to-start-your-day/
Starrcamp is geared to strengthen your child's skills and confidence in readiness, reading, writing, math and other subject are at all levels.

Skills Mania
Being away from school doesn't mean your child’s learning has to stop, or boredom has to set in. At STARRCamp, your children’s days will be filled with new skills, inspired teamwork, hands-on activities, and endless sprinkles of joy. We provide opportunities for team building while encouraging students to develop problem-solving skills. Study skills are also explored, for our older students, to help them develop the time management and organizational skills needed to manage an increased workload and heightened expectations.

Activity Mania
Fun! Fun! Fun! Craft, music, field trips, water explosion, character dress up, cooking, and much more are all part of the STARRCamp experience. Success Through Academics, Recreation and Reflection, speaks to the philosophy that undergirds this camp. The philosophy that all children can experience success when given the right tools needed to do so. These tools MUST intertwine the cognitive(head), psychomotor( whole body movement) and the affective (heart) domains. STARRCamp does just that!
